Frequently Asked Questions

Does Acupuncture Work?

YES. Modern scientific research has proven this to be a viable, efficient, and effective therapy.

Is it Painful?

Acupuncture is generally painless. Most people do not even feel the needles going in, or they may feel a very small prick. Following the insertion of the needles you may feel a sensation of tingling, numbness, ache, radiating warmth, or heaviness-this is the qi moving. Many people find the treatments very relaxing and will sometimes even nap during them. You may feel more energetic in the days following the treatment.

Do Acupuncturists use Clean Needles?

The acupuncture needles are made of stainless steel and are very thin. Each needle is for one time use.

How do I prepare for my visit?

If you are receiving acupuncture, please wear loose fitting clothes so that we can access specific acupuncture points. You should also have eaten within the 3 hours before you arrive for your appointment. We will not be able to treat anyone who has been drinking alcohol, so please abstain on the day of your appointment. Also, refrain from brushing your tongue (the tongue coating helps in achieving the proper diagnosis).

What should I do after my treatment?

After your treatment, it is important for you to take care of yourself. Light exercise is okay. It is also okay to eat right after your appointment. Drink lots of water and avoid alcoholic beverages. Try to avoid stressful situations or schedule acupuncture late in the day so you are able to relax after your appointment. Your acupuncturists may have other recommendations for you to follow after your treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Acupuncture generally has minimal side effects. There may be some muscle soreness or bruising in the area of needle insertion. Some people may feel slightly sensitive after a treatment, especially during an emotional time. You may feel sleepy and relaxed after a treatment, so it is best not to schedule anything taxing for the few hours following your appointment. Occasionally, patients may experience dizziness or nausea. If you have any side effects that seem unusual or concerning, please call us at 612-888-6271.

How long will my condition take to get better?

Each person is unique and the number of treatments varies. Some will experience results after their first visit, while others will require a longer series of treatment. This depends on the severity and chronic nature of the complaint. Overall, you should expect to see some results within 3-5 visits and should notice overall improvement with your condition after each treatment. Your acupuncturist should have a fairly good understanding of your condition after 2-3 visits and will be able to offer you a more precise estimate.
